Are you studying for Cambridge C1 Advanced and feeling a bit daunted by the reading part of the CAE exam?

Well, don't worry! Today, we're looking at Reading Part 7,or the Gapped Text task. It’s like a puzzle where you have to fit all the pieces together, and I’m here to help you crack the code with a simple strategy.

What is Reading Part 7?

Reading Part 7 of the Cambridge C1 exam, a.k.a. the gapped text task, is where your detective skills come into play. This section presents you with a piece of writing, typically an article or essay, but with a twist—several paragraphs have been removed and you need to insert the correct ones.

What does it test? It’s all about understanding how texts flow, recognizing cohesive devices (those little words or phrases that connect ideas smoothly), and knowing how different parts of a text link together to form a coherent whole.

Why is this part tricky?

Well, it’s not just about plugging in text based on a hunch. You need to meticulously analyze the structure and logic of the text. The missing pieces aren’t labeled with neat little numbers or hints; instead, you have to use your understanding of the text’s flow and cohesion to find their rightful places. Sounds like a challenge, right?

The Winning Strategy for Gapped Text

Now, let’s break down a strategic approach to conquering this challenging part of the CAE reading section. Here’s a step-by-step guide that’ll have you placing paragraphs like a pro:

1. Focus on the First and Last Line of Each Paragraph

The opening and closing lines of paragraphs are typically where the main ideas are introduced or summarized. By paying close attention to these lines, you can get a sense of what the paragraph is about and what might logically follow or precede it. Cohesive devices often come at the start of a paragraph too and these are crucial for determining where the missing paragraphs might fit.

2. Look for Cohesive Devices or Linking Words

Cohesive devices are the glue of the English language. Words like however, therefore, moreover, and consequently show the relationship between statements and paragraphs. Spotting these words in the gapped paragraphs and the existing text can give you clues about where the paragraph belongs. For example, a paragraph starting with "However" might be contrasting a point made just before it.

3. Look for Pronouns or References

Pronouns like they, it, then, here, and that are often referential, pointing back to earlier mentions in the text. If a gapped paragraph mentions "they," skim the preceding paragraphs to see what "they" could be referring to. This tactic helps ensure that all parts of your gappex text exercise are connected correctly and that the flow makes sense.

4. Look for a Similar Context

Context is king in the Reading Part 7. Sometimes, the thematic or situational context of a paragraph gives you the best clue as to where it belongs. If a paragraph discusses a specific event or idea, look for other paragraphs that touch on similar topics.

5. Add a Paragraph and Reread to Check It Fits

Once you think you’ve found a paragraph's home, don’t just move on after placing it. Insert it and then reread the surrounding text to ensure it flows naturally. If something feels off, it might be worth reevaluating your choice. This step is like trying on clothes in a fitting room—you want to make sure it fits perfectly before you take it to the checkout!
